partially sighted and visually handicapped people in assistance and help.
Medical Ophthalmic Research Investigation (MORI)
Emphasizes a self-running through supplies (medicines,
medical, para medical and optical equipments and systems). It offers service,
help and information for a better way of life especially (among others) in the
field of eye care, clinical optics and investigative ophthalmology for blinds
and visually impaired population in addition to social improvements by promoting
and starting practical opportunities.
Medical Ophthalmic Research Investigation (MORI)
Is founded to give ophthalmological/optical service and
eye care assistance to raise the standards of eye/vision welfare system.
Collaboration with local and international bodies of same/similar and/or related
activities and fields is a fundamental objective. This might be achieved by
carrying out joint works, research projects, mutual meetings (on different
levels) to exchange ideas experience and improve performance in Ophthalmic
fields. Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathies, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Paediatric
Ophthalmology and Visual/Optical Rehabilitation are objective activities locally
and abroad as needed especially in developing countries in Africa and countries
in need world-wide. MORI-projects are designed on yearly basis with possible
extension to another period depending on resources.
Medical Ophthalmic Research Investigation (MORI)

G R O N I N G E N, DECEMBER
2003
INTRODUCTION
Working in a stichting (foundation) requires
a lot of administration, efforts and, sometimes, physical work to drive between
different locations to bring and load/unload given materials. Mr. Henk Kral, St.
MORI secretaris, has shown a lot of the mentioned.
Various types of contributions in St.
MORI-activities, have been supported by many advises and ideas suggested by Mr.
Hansbroek (OogMerk Optics-Groningen), Mr. Vriend (Vriend Optics-Groningen), Mr.
Beste (Ootech-lamires-Niewegein) Mr. Pop (Kompleet Optics-Apeldoorn), Pearle
Optics-Amersfoort, Mrs. Inke (Eye wish Optics-Groningen), and Dr. Ensink,
Ophthalmologist (Isala-Kliniken-Zwolle). Their contribution has made St.
MORI-activities possible and the objectives achievable.
St. MORI-activities include Para-Medical,
Medical/Ophthalmological and Optical help and service (and medications/glasses
supplies upon availability) in developing countries. These activities are
designed on world-wide scale taking the Netherlands as a base for support.
Therefore sponsoring and material necessary to realise St. MORI-objectives have
to be reached by applying/appealing to different resources locally and
abroad.
St. MORI offers its help and service to the
needy on non-dominational, non-racial, non religious and non-political basis. In
order to raise the standards of the health (eye) welfare system St.
MORI-activities and St. MORI-objectives are open to individuals, institutions,
foundations and other bodies of similar activities and objectives. St. MORI
creates an umbrella for collaboration, contacts, combined projects and work with
other associations, organizations and clubs as well as other figures of similar
goals nationally and abroad. This can be achieved by realising mutual
activities.
ACTIVITIES OF St. MORI
St. MORI-activities
include Supportive-activities in the Netherlands and Executive-activities
abroad. Many contacts in different ways with necessary resources which maybe
capable to support action and function have been performed. St. MORI-projects
are designed on one year basis with possible extension to another period
depending on resources, progress and availability. Short-term activities can be
arranged according to needs.
a- In the NETHERLANDS
Main Supportive-activities are to get
resources for material and for sponsoring this is in the Netherlands. Material
includes secondhand Optical/Ophthalmicequipments, frames old and new and reading
glasses old and new. Material has to be searched and collected on donation basis
or symbolic prices.
Sponsoring (in addition to the already
existing sponsoring scheme) means contacting potential resources by application
and appealing for financial support to cover prices of material as mentioned
above if getting material is not possible on donation basis. Also travel
expenses, locally and abroad, are important to be cured. All details of
sponsoring and financial report can be given by Mr. Hank Kral.
St. MORI has been in continuous contacts with
the previous resources in the Netherlands. Contacts have been made with Mr.
Simon Boersma, Regio directeur Balkan, from Dorcas Aid International to sec out
possible joint work in Kennedy Humanitarian Kliniek in KORCA, ALBANIA. Contact
has been made with Mrs. Marleen van Voorde (de project leidster) in ALBANIA for
the same purpose. There is a possibility to Dr. Hassan to visit KORCA in
collaboration with Dorcas (Netherlands) and Kennedy Clinic in ALBANIA.
OPT/-PLAZA in Hemsteede has been approached for possible glasses/frames
collection for St. MORI activities. An advice has been given for this matter.
Mrs Shera Niewhuis from St. Mensen in Nood, has been contacted to investigate
possible help to the needy especially in the coming cold winter in BOSNIA an
ALBANIE. A possibility is to be worked out. Contact has been made with St.
Meditech to see possible help in supplying/service second hand equipments
necessary to St. MORI activities abroad. With help and advice of Dr. B. Ansink,
Ophthalmologist, Technical Service Department at Sophia Hospital, Zwolle, has
denoted to St. MORI a Hot Air Sterilizer and Octopus Computerized Visual Field
Analyzer. This action has been welcome by St. MORI.
b- ABROAD
Executive-activities carried out abroad since
St. MORI is designed on world-wide. Continuation of Humanitarian Eye Clinic
(H.A. C) service is the sole objective of St. MORI existed in Bosnia and
Hercegovina (Details about H.A.C. could be found in the annual reports
2001/2002). Conclusions, as have been mentioned in the last report, are still
important to be realised due to clinical needs. In this context a visit has been
paid to the Cantonal Hospital in GORAZDA. Recently the hospital has appointed a
local ophthalmologist to give help to the population. They are still in needs
for equipments and surgical instruments to do the job properly. Also the
Cultural Club and the Refugee Camp have been visited. Alderly people and
Diabetic patients are in serious need for clinical ophthalmic evaluation. They
have not such service since the end of the war. For the time being St. MOR/is
busy to get the necessary resources to collect needed ophthalmic/optical
equipments and surgical instruments. Some contacts have been made in this
direction.
St. MORI is collaborating with FONDA TION
HASSAN 11 D'OPHTHALMOLOGIA, RABA T, MOROCCO. This foundation has activities in
all of rural areas in MOROCCO. The sole activity is to prevent Blindness due to
CATARACT development. CATARACT surgery as well as TRACHOMA managements
(medical/surgical for Trichiasis) are the clinical practice of FONDA TION HASSAN
II.
In March/April, 2003, Dr. A. F. Hassan has
visited FONDA TION HASSAN 11 in RABAT, MOROCCO. He participated in their Mission
curried out from 15 till 19, April 2003. This Mission has been curried out in a
small tiny town/village named DEMNA T at the heart of the MIDDLE-ATLAS Mountains
at about + 460 KM at the South of RABAT , the capital City of MOROCCO. This
town/village is an old historical place near OURAZAZA TA and MARRAKECH in a
triangle posture. It has about + 60 000. inhabitants including the scattered
small villages and lanes. Duration of the Mission was five days.
A group of Ophthalmologists, Nursing Staff
and Technicians headed by Prof. A. BARRAHO have done the work in this Mission.
The work has been performed at the local Medical Centre/Hospital in DAMNA T.
Contribution of local people has been significate to help doing the job. Thanks
to the good weather which has enabled to set up a TENT as temporary
inpatient-section for post-operated patients.

Local announcement was scattered between the
populations in the area via local people. Mass of patients had come seeking a
help. Many pathologies have been diagnosed, classified and sorted out and
treated, of course, with special emphasis on CATARACT
and TRACHOMA. During this Mission CATARACT surgery has been performed to
more than + 160 patients and more than +33 TRICHIASIS surgery. Myself 1 have
seen more +200 patients having scattered different ophthalmic pathology.
Medications and some glasses have been given freely to the patients.
Follow up Post-operative care were
conducted by local Medical Centre in collaboration with a local Ophthalmologist
coming from MERAKECH (about + 120 KM). The Mission was successful and highly
welcome by local people and local authorities. Personally I am still
willing to help them if circumstances allow me to do so
again.
The University Hospital Centre (CHU) in RABAT was
also one of the places visited by Dr. Hassan. He with other colleagues has seen
many patients attending the CHU Ophthalmic Clinic. Experience and ideas exchange
were very fruitful.
BOSNIA and HERCEGOVINA, ALBANIA, GHANA and
MOROCCO are areas where we hope to progress to give more help and create
collaboration projects and joint works there. No doubt this is dependent on many
factors, among them, are good understanding to St. MORI activities, wide
thinking and generous spirits of our supporters in the Netherlands and abroad.
As it has been said:
IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A
WAY.
